Penile dermatology

Pippa Sangster has had specialist training in penile dermatology and is well versed in treating these conditions. Men should be aware of several penile dermatological conditions, including:

  1. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition generally found in men who have not been circumcised. It causes inflammation and scarring and is thought to be caused by long-term exposure of the skin to urine. This urine becomes trapped between the foreskin and head of the penis. The head of the penis can become pale and patchy, inner foreskin can become thin, red and inflamed. Men will often experience itching, pain, and discomfort during sexual activity.
  2. Genital Psoriasis: Psoriasis can affect the genitals, causing red, scaly patches or plaques. It can be itchy and uncomfortable.
  3. Genital Warts (HPV): Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause warts on the genitals, including the penis. These warts may be small, raised, or clustered and can sometimes cause itching or discomfort. We hope that the vaccination programme that was brought in for young people in the last 5 years will slowly lead to the disappearance of this virus.
  4. Genital Herpes: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause genital herpes, characterized by painful sores or blisters on the penis, genital area, or anus.
  5. Balanitis: Balanitis is inflammation of the glans penis, often caused by poor hygiene, infection, or irritation. It can result in redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort.
  6. Fungal Infections: Fungal infections, particularly candidiasis (yeast infection), can occur on the penis and surrounding skin. Symptoms may include redness, itching, soreness, and discharge. Men are very frequently diagnosed with fungal infections when in fact they have Lichen sclerosus. This is why it is vital to see a specialist such as Pippa Sangster if you keep having flare ups of discomfort and irritation.
  7. Pearly Penile Papules: Pearly penile papules are harmless, small, dome-shaped bumps that may appear around the head of the penis. They are completely normal and typically do not require any treatment.
  8. Scabies: Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin. It can cause intense itching and a rash, including on the genitals.
  9. Molloscum: Genital molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, characterized by small, painless bumps or lesions in the genital area. These bumps may be flesh-coloured, pearly, or have a dimpled centre, and they can spread through sexual contact.
  10. Contact Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis can occur when the skin comes into contact with an irritating substance or allergen, leading to redness, itching, and inflammation.

It’s essential for men to be aware of these conditions, practice good genital hygiene, and seek medical attention if they experience persistent or severe symptoms. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are important for managing these dermatological conditions effectively.
