Circumcision involves the surgical removal of the foreskin, which is the retractable fold of skin covering the glans penis.

Why would a man need a circumcision?

-chronic inflammation of the foreskin leading to pain on erection and during sexual intercourse. 

-Discomfort/itching

– Occasionally the foreskin can adhere to the head of the penis causing scarring, bleeding and tearing

-recurrent infection – balanitis

-Tight foreskin which is difficult to retract for cleaning or sex (phimosis)

-cancerous or precancerous lesions on the head/glans or the inner foreskin

What are the alterative options?

Dr Sangster will always try a conservative treatment plan first if there are no concerning lesions on the penis. This can involve different topical creams, changing your washing practices and avoiding trapping of urine under the skin.

If a man decides to have a circumcision, what foes this involve?

Dr Sangster tends to carry this out as a day case using a general anaesthetic. A local anaesthetic will be used at the end of the procedure so that you should wake up very comfortable. Absorbable sutures will be used, that tend to take 4 weeks to dissolve.  Most men will have a few days off work and avoid heavy exercise for 2-3 weeks. 

What are the risks of the procedure?

These include bleeding, infection, a scar below the head of the penis, some swelling (oedema) around the scar and a change in the sensitivity on the head of the penis as it will be uncovered following the operation.
